South East WalesAlice Brown has been HRD Coordinator for tourism in South East Wales since March. Based in Cardiff in the Capital Region Tourism offices, her role is to facilitate skills development amongst tourism businesses in order to increase the quality and competitiveness of tourism. Her focus so far has been on establishing contact with the trade via Tourism Associations and clusters, running pilot training courses before the busy summer season and forming links with local training providers. Over the summer Alice will be busy planning, promoting and recruiting to an Autumn Training Programme. Look out for Sense of the Valleys, Beat the Credit Crunch Sustainably, Web Site Surgeries and much more. In the long term she would like to see tourism recognised as the diverse, talented, multi-skilled industry it is and tourism careers further professionalised and respected. Alice’s background is in hospitality and tourism. A GNVQ in Hospitality and Catering led to various hotel and restaurant jobs and then a degree in Business, Leisure and Tourism. Her first job as a graduate was as an Event Organiser, planning weddings, conferences and special events. Since then the travel bug has taken Alice to work for an adventure tour company in New Zealand and Hostelling International in Canada. Her interest in the human impacts of tourism led Alice to a post graduate diploma in Tourism and Sustainability and work for The Travel Foundation, a charity working to make UK outbound tourism more sustainable. Alice is looking forward to drawing on her work, education and travel experience to make a difference to the most important element of the Capital Region Tourism Industry – Its’ People. Coming soon…look out for the new skills section on the Capital Region Tourism website for forthcoming training opportunities and your chance to have a say on what training you would like to see on offer. Until then please contact Alice with any queries on alice.brown@capitalregiontourism.org Please see below for more articles:
