Gender Equality in the Tourism Workplace in Wales

By Alan White, Dr Eleri Jones and Diana James*
Welsh School of Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure Management, University
of Wales Institute, Cardiff and Tourism Training Forum for Wales*

Perceptions of equality of opportunity by core staff, i.e. non-seasonal, full-time and regarded by the employer as permanent staff - 'proper jobs' rather than seasonal work - are important in determining longer-term attitudes towards employment in the tourism and hospitality industry and are critical to the future of the tourism and hospitality industry in Wales.

This paper explores the extant nature of equal opportunities and gender equality at organisational level in the tourism sector in Wales. It investigates direct and indirect discrimination in the workplace and examines the extent of evolution of action towards 'mainstreaming' equal opportunities policies. The 1975 Sex Discrimination Act and its legal framework provide an overall context for the study.
